Vice President, Energy and Climate, Carbon XPrize

Dr. Marcius Extavour is a leader and expert in climate tech, carbon removal, and new energy technologies.

As Vice President, Energy & Climate at XPRIZE he leads the $100-million XPRIZE Carbon Removal supported by Elon Musk, and the recently-awarded $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, a global competition to recycle CO2 into valuable products.

He speaks and writes on climate innovation, energy and environment related technology development, and the financial and policy aspects of innovation.

Before joining XPRIZE his work spanned basic R&D, technology development, and policy in the US and Canada as a AAAS Fellow at U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources, in the electric power and telecoms businesses, and in academia. His present service includes seats on the Board on Energy and Environment Systems at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; Neste’s Advisory Council for Sustainability & New Markets; the non-profit advisory boards of Carbon180 and Global CO2 Initiative; and the Carbon to Value Task Force.

Dr. Extavour received a PhD and MSc in Physics from the University of Toronto, where he explored the quantum mechanics of light and matter near absolute zero. He also holds a BASc in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto, where he built a pancake-making robot and combined nanomaterials with solar cells. Marcius is also a musician, loves teaching, and is active in connecting with young scientists interested in careers inside and outside of academia.
