The IOG Remembers Tim Plumptre (1943–2025)

January 27th, 2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Tim Plumptre, the visionary founder of the Institute on Governance. Tim’s unwavering dedication to advancing good governance both in Canada and internationally has shaped not only the fields of public and nonprofit leadership but also the lives of countless individuals who had the privilege of working with and learning from him.

Tim founded the Institute on Governance in the early 1990’s with a bold vision: to strengthen democratic institutions and foster good governance as a cornerstone of thriving societies. Through his leadership, the IOG became a place where ideas were nurtured, principles upheld, and collaboration flourished. Generations of staff, associates, and partners were inspired by his wisdom, energy, and commitment to the public good. Tim’s legacy lives on in the work we do every day, a testament to his belief that governance matters profoundly in shaping a better world.
Tim will be remembered for his compassion, his ability to bring people together, and his unfailing belief in the power of dialogue and partnership. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire the IOG community, past and present.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Tim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. A celebration of Tim’s remarkable life will be held on March 9th at the National Arts Centre Salon, Ottawa.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation or The Ottawa Hospital in his memory.
