This webinar is a “user guide” for those working in and with the Canadian government and provides an overview of the structures, processes and players of the Canadian government. We will set out the core constitutional and institutional foundations and move to decision making across the system. We will consider not just how things are organized but why, and what that means for the participant.

What you will gain

  • The Westminster model of government in Canada, including the roles and responsibilities of Parliament, the judiciary, Cabinet and ministers and how these elements work
  • Federalism and fiscal federalism in Canada
  • The role of the PM as the architect and chair of Cabinet and determiner of the machinery of government
  • The planning cycles and decision-making processes surrounding Cabinet and its committees, including the Treasury Board
  • The role of central agencies and their ministers, including the Minister of Finance and President of the Treasury Board
