Science and innovation are necessary to address Canada’s grand challenges and to build robust and inclusive prosperity and resiliency in the 21st century. To do this, we need highly qualified personnel who operate at the interface of science, innovation, policy and communications to connect these worlds and translate knowledge from one area to the other.

The ability to communicate complex scientific evidence and theories in plain language to a variety of audiences is crucial to addressing the grand challenges facing Canada and the world today.

What you can expect

This course is delivered by seasoned communicators who have extensive experience working with scientists and at the interface of science, policy, and communications. The course is delivered using a mix of theory and real-world case studies to help participants understand the challenge of communicating science to a non-scientific audience. Instructors also use a mix of individual and group exercises to give participants opportunities to improve their communications skills.

What you will gain

By the end of the one-day course, participants will have:

  • Learned the principles of strategic communications
  • Gained a better appreciation of how science and communications can support each other to advance public understanding of complex theories and ideas; and,
  • Developed skills to design and deliver plain language communication for a variety of non-scientific audiences.
