In the spirit of Open Government, the IOG is hosting an open "policy hackathon" called Open4Policy. The "Open4" stands for 1) Open Government, 2) Open Access, 3) Open Data and 4) Open Invitation. The aim of the hackathon is to help promote Open Government by providing Open Access to our policy development processes and by using Open Data from the Government of Canada to solve a policy problem, all while extending an Open Invitation to anyone from the policy community that would like to participate, either online or in person.

(You do not need to be a coder to participate, all policy enthusiasts are welcome!)

The policy problem to be tackled will be unveiled the morning of the Hackathon, and the participants themselves will be the ones to determine parameters of the end product. The only hard requirements of the Hackathon are that it be as open as possible. The end result and working materials will be put up on the IOG's website, or wherever the group of "policy hackers" (including you!) decides the work will have the greatest impact. Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a hackathon?

Hackathons are something between a design charrette and a LAN-party. Initially pioneered in the software community, Hackathons are now conducted on all manner of issues including matters of policy. The essence of a policy hackathon is to bring together a group of policy practitioners for a sustained period of time in order to make progress on a certain issue.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just an open mind! A laptop could be helpful as well.

Where is the hackathon?

The hackathon will take place at the Institute on Governance's brand new ASPIRE lab, our recently constructed innovation collaboratory. To access the "collaboratory", come to our regular entrance at 60 George Street and you will be shown to the ASPIRE lab space.

I cannot get to the IOG ASPIRE lab that day. How else can I get involved?

We will be live streaming the event, as well as Tweeting and making our progress accessible for Google Docs. Feel free to observe, comment or contribute as much as you see fit through any of these mediums!
