Why does good governance matter?

Good governance is not an end in itself, but rather a process and a set of practices that enable organizations to realize their goals.  While the fundamental requirements of good governance are long-standing, our practical understanding of governance must take into consideration changes in technology, civil society and government.

When done well, effective governance:

  • Promotes trust in the organization and its people;
  • Improves morale among staff and stakeholders;
  • Enhances services to the public and stakeholders;
  • Improves decision-making and the quality of these decisions;
  • Connects your organization to its stakeholders;
  • Enhances the perception of the organization among citizens and stakeholders;
  • Improves organizational resilience;
  • Improves financial stability.

The challenge therefore lies in understanding the particular circumstance of the institution and how to apply principle-based, good governance practices.
