Interactive Workshop

This one-day interactive workshop provides an understanding of how you can design, implement and use performance measurement systems to manage and report on program results as outlined in the new TB Policy on Results and the government’s Results & Delivery approach.

Why this course is important?

Treasury Board’s new Policy on Results came into effect July 1 and reflects the principles, and practice, of Sir Michael Barber’s deliverology as articulated by the Results and Delivery Unit at PCO. If you’re a program manager, you will need a performance measurement system that can credibly and effectively ‘tell your program’s performance story’ within the context of the new Policy, help you improve program results and provide useful information to support your planning and decision making needs.

Your ability to clearly tell this story is directly linked to, among other things, your program’s future success and your personal performance evaluation.

Who should participate in this course?

Managers and senior staff interested in strengthening their understanding of the utility of performance measurement systems, how to develop and implement them, and how use the performance information generated to plan, deliver and report on program results.Adapted performance measurement courses and workshops are also available and can be specifically designed and delivered on request to suit the requirements of branches, teams or groups in any part of the country.

Participants will be able to better understand:

  • How performance measurement is situated in the context of federal government management policies and its role in good management and good governance
  • How to design, implement, operate and use performance measurement systems to manage and report on program results.

Workshop and discussion topics will include:

  • Facilitators and barriers to effective performance measurement
  • Various ways of developing effective logic models
  • Deciding on what is important to measure
  • Identifying and selecting useful performance indicators
  • Developing a performance measurement strategy
  • Data sources and collection methods
  • Basic data analysis approaches
  • Good practices and pitfalls in performance measurement
  • Issues and trends in performance measurement

What you can expect:

  • A skilled and experienced workshop leader
  • To be actively engaged in hands-on small group exercises to practice  the development of a logic model and the associated performance measurement strategy
  • Leave the course with examples of generic logic models for different program types and a menu of generic performance indicators

Course fee
The cost of this course is $890 (no HST) per person. The price includes expert facilitation, course materials, morning and afternoon coffee or tea, and a buffet lunch. Registration is done through an online registration system where you can select to pay by credit card or request an invoice.

The IOG value-added
