Why briefings are important

Providing advice and information in an accurate and timely way is a key responsibility of today’s public service professionals. Many forms of written and oral briefings are used to communicate with senior officials and elected leaders as part of government decision-making processes. The art of effective briefings includes a broader understanding of the context and audience needs as well as critical thinking, research and communication skills; skills that are constantly called upon in interactions with colleagues, stakeholders and superiors alike.
