Summary

This one-day course highlights the policy and service delivery implications of the growing demographic of seniors in Canadian society that is challenging government, private sector, non-profit and societal assumptions about and responses to aging.

Who should participate in this course?

This course is designed for policy and program delivery staff in public sector organizations who are designing programs, policies, services, laws and regulations that will affect older persons in Canada.

Participants will learn

  • Communicate with and engage older groups in society
  • Design appropriate infrastructure that supports the needs of seniors
  • Take advantage of technologies in communicating with and meeting the needs of seniors
  • About changing workplace practices and knowledge transfer programs and intergenerational interactions
  • Current government policies and programs directed to seniors, both in Canada and internationally
  • Shift from a view of scarcity and fear to embrace and seize the opportunities of these new demographic dynamics

Discussion topics will include

  • A brief history and current context of Canadian and global approaches to aging
  • The politics of an aging nation – impacts on health, wealth, retirement, pensions and longevity and more
  • Human dimensions of aging
  • Institutional innovation and adaptation

What to expect

This one-day seminar-style course encourages reflection, sharing and active exchange of ideas, examples and strategies through structured exercises and thought-provoking guest presentations.

Course fee

The cost of this course is $990 (no HST) per person. The price includes expert facilitation, lunch and course materials. Registration is done through an online registration system where you can select to pay by credit card or request an invoice

Location

At the IOG premises at 60 George St. in the Byward Market, downtown Ottawa.

Time

Our courses run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Why this course is important

Today, we have the largest group of seniors ever witnessed in Canada’s history, contributing to the age wave in our economy and society.  From transportation systems, to financial offerings, housing, health and social services, the aging of our population is reshaping our workplaces, consumer markets, and our modes of service delivery.

The IOG value-added

All IOG courses are prepared and taught be those who have held senior positions in the federal government. They are guided by a Learning Committee of senior federal government public servants which is chaired by the DM of AAFC, John Knubley.

Course fees include a follow-up coffee discussion and networking session (with your colleagues) where you will be able to discuss challenges faced and successes met when you tried to implement our strategies.
