Modern Makers of Canada award dinner an overwhelming success

The Institute on Governance is delighted with the success of the inaugural Modern Makers of Canada award dinner. The 2011 Excellentia Award recognized the unique contribution made by two great Canadian political leaders, former premiers Gordon Campbell and Danny Williams.

The award dinner took place on Monday June 6th at the newly opened Ottawa Convention Centre.  The Honourable John Baird and the Honourable Anne McLellan were the co-chairs of the dinner and they kept the 200 guests in attendance laughing throughout the evening.

The Canada we know today has been shaped by the interaction of its people, its leaders, and its governing institutions over the past 143 years. This evolution continues as Canadians in all walks of life strive to make Canada’s economy and society innovative and dynamic.

This evolution was achieved because Canada was built upon solid democratic and public sector institutions and practices that fostered good governance and accommodation. Good governance requires a process of constant adaptation, learning and renewal to economic and social realities and events. The Modern Makers of Canada Award has been established to recognize Canadians who have contributed to good governance through transformational public sector leadership.

The 2011 Recipients

The inaugural award recognizes the unique contribution made by two great Canadian political leaders, former premiers Gordon Campbell and Danny Williams. Both entered office at junctures where transformational change was required to preserve their governments’ ability to fulfill their primary missions. Both led a rethinking of the governmental mission and good governance, which led to a renaissance in their public services. Both were stewards of economic renewal and champions in ensuring that economic development foremost benefited their citizens and communities.
