Founded in 1990 the Institute on Governance (IOG) is an independent, Canada-based, not-for-profit public interest institution with its head office in Ottawa and an office in Toronto. Over the past 20 years the IOG has advanced better understanding and practice of good governance in Canada, with federal, provincial, municipal and aboriginal governments, not-for-profit organizations and in 35 countries including most recently projects in Iraq, Myanmar and South America. Our work is marked by independent thought, innovation, collaboration, excellence, and a responsive and principled approach. Position summary

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with an organization that engages with a wide range of clients and partners in Canada and abroad including governments, communities, universities, and private and public organizations. The internship will last approximately three months. Interns contribute to the IOG’s projects in a range of areas relating to public sector governance.

Main duties and responsibilities

The intern will support the IOG team in the following areas:

  • Conducting directed analytical research including: information collection, preparation of summaries, research artifacts, discussion papers, presentations, and research papers;
  • Conducting primary and secondary analysis in the context of directed advisory projects for public sector clients;
  • Assisting with drafting briefings, letters, proposals and client deliverables;
  • Providing general logistical/organizational support to the team as required.

Example applied research to which interns contribute include the IOG’s research program on digital governance, which explores the historic challenges and opportunities facing governing institutions in the digital era, and the Institute’s program on risk, oversight, and accountability, which provides an analytical framework for understanding contemporary public governance risks and the most effective oversight approaches and mechanisms for managing these risks. Interns may also be called upon to contribute to advisory or research work relating to indigenous governance, not-for-profit and board governance, or other aspects of the IOG’s work in public sector governance.

 

Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Relevant academic qualifications (e.g. in public policy and administration, governance, political science, indigenous affairs)
  • Excellent qualitative research skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Accuracy and an eye for detail
  • Discretion
  • Well-organized and efficient

 

Asset:

  • Qualifications or experience in other fields relevant to the IOG’s areas of activity
  • French language skills
  • Quantitative skills and experience

About the Authors

    Davide Cargnello

    Chief Research Officer

    As Chief Research Officer, Davide leads the Institute’s research practice. His responsibilities include directing the Institute’s research programs and intellectual property development, building partnerships, and providing advisory services to public sector clients.

    He has a strong professional and academic background in accountability, risk, institutional and applied ethics, digital governance, and theories of public administration, gained through fifteen years of experience in the academic and public sectors in Canada and the UK.

    Current major initiatives include a multi-year applied research and engagement program focusing on the impacts of digital culture and technologies on Westminster governing institutions, an initiative on risk, accountability and innovation in the public sector, research on democratic governance and reform, and a research and engagement project on indigenous governance.

    Before joining the Institute, Davide was a lecturer at the University of Oxford and a visiting scholar at McGill University. He holds a doctorate in ethics from the University of Oxford, a master’s in public administration from Carleton University, a master’s in philosophy from the University of Oxford, and a bachelor’s degree from McGill University.

    He is fluent in English, French and Italian with working knowledge of Spanish and German.
