EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Founder’s Intern
Founded in 1990 the Institute on Governance (IOG) is an independent, Canada-based, not-for-profit public interest institution with its head office in Ottawa and an office in Toronto. Over the past 20 years the IOG has advanced better understanding and practice of good governance in Canada, with federal, provincial, municipal and aboriginal governments, not-for-profit organizations and in 35 countries including most recently projects in Iraq, Myanmar and South America. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with an organization that engages with a wide range of clients and partners in Canada and abroad including governments, communities, universities, and private and public organizations. The internship will last approximately three months. Interns contribute to the IOG’s projects in a range of areas relating to public sector governance.

Main duties and responsibilities
The intern will support the IOG team in the following areas:
- Conducting directed analytical research including: information collection, preparation of summaries, research artifacts, discussion papers, presentations, and research papers;
- Conducting primary and secondary analysis in the context of directed advisory projects for public sector clients;
- Assisting with drafting briefings, letters, proposals and client deliverables;
- Providing general logistical/organizational support to the team as required.
Example applied research to which interns contribute include the IOG’s research program on digital governance, which explores the historic challenges and opportunities facing governing institutions in the digital era, and the Institute’s program on risk, oversight, and accountability, which provides an analytical framework for understanding contemporary public governance risks and the most effective oversight approaches and mechanisms for managing these risks. Interns may also be called upon to contribute to advisory or research work relating to indigenous governance, not-for-profit and board governance, or other aspects of the IOG’s work in public sector governance.
Qualifications and experience
- Relevant academic qualifications (e.g. in public policy and administration, governance, political science, indigenous affairs)
- Excellent qualitative research skills
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Accuracy and an eye for detail
- Well-organized and efficient
- Qualifications or experience in other fields relevant to the IOG’s areas of activity
- French language skills
- Quantitative skills and experience
